Jill Ellicott
After several years working in financial services of which the vast majority has been in the INDEPENDENT sector, I firmly believe that everyone should have access to INDEPENDENT ADVICE.
What I mean by this is advice that is not given by most banks and building societies or by any of the insurance companies or friendly societies. This is because they represent either just one company’s products or a small proportion of the market place.
Independent Advice is exactly that, it is about ADVICE. It may be that no product is involved or required!.
My aim is to provide completely individual advice to each client, which normally requires three stages: |
| |
Stage One
I need to find out about you, your family and career. The provision you have already made in respect of borrowings, life and health protection, pensions, investments and savings.
Then, I need to find out what you would want to happen in certain events, the level of risk you are willing to take and how much you are willing or are able to contribute financially to achieving this.
Stage Two
Once I have this information I am able to investigate what options are available to you and if product solutions are required I will research the whole of the market on your behalf.
Stage Three
My advice will be based on what provision you have already made, taking into account any future changes that you are planning and covering the whole of your financial situation. |
If any product solutions are necessary, I can implement these on your behalf.
My advice will be confirmed in writing so that you have a permanent record of our discussions and how we came to the decision’s that were made.
It is important to review your financial situation regularly so this frequency will also be agreed.

Before commencing any work for you, I will provide you with full details of fees and charges.
If you have taken advice previously, this may have been ‘free’ and the adviser was paid a commission by the insurance company.
As an Independent Financial Adviser, I can work on a fee, commission or a combination of fee and commission.
If a mortgage is involved, I may need to charge a fee in addition to the commission that is paid by the lender to cover my time and overheads. However, taking commission from a mortgage lender does not cause any detriment to you as a client as the same mortgage would be available whether you came through an adviser or went directly to the lender. In fact because of the large volumes of business that are placed via Bates, we often have exclusive products available from the lenders which are better than those available if you were to go direct. |
An example of a recent case I did for a client resulted in a saving of over £3,000 over the period of the new mortgage product on a mortgage of less than £100,000.
The situation is different when it comes to an investment or pension product. Taking commission on these affects their performance although you would be unlikely to get a discount if you went to the provider directly. Therefore it is usually more beneficial to pay an upfront fee if it is affordable.
On a protection product, it is possible to decrease the premium by re-bating some or all of the commission. Again, if you went direct you would be unlikely to be offered better terms. This can help significantly if affordability is an issue which can often be the case where critical illness cover is required.
My fees are always based on the level of time and complexity of a case and three illustrations are always provided. |
| |
1. Will show you a full commission basis.
2. Will show you a nil commission basis.
3. Will show you a combination dependent on whether or not the commission would cover my fee. |
| This allows me to transact business in a totally transparent way and allows you to choose the option which suits you best. |
